Motorists, hopefully including courier drivers, will be pleased to read that premiums to insure cars have, on average, dropped once again in the 3rd quarter of this year. Whilst this information relates to cars it may be that courier insurance premiums are seeing a similar fall. In any event, it is quite possible that courier drivers may also own a car that they use for their family rather than their courier van.

Each quarter, the well-known price comparison website Confused.com publishes its Car Insurance Price Index. The full report can be found on its website but we highlight some of the interesting statistics below.

In the 3rd quarter of 2024 the average premium paid by car drivers was £861 per annum. In the 2nd quarter of 2024 the figure was £882 per annum. In the 1st quarter of this year premiums averaged £941 per annum. In the 4th quarter of 2023 premiums averaged £995 per annum. So, that is a drop of £134 per annum between Q4 of 2023 and Q3 of 2024. We are sure that you will agree that is no small reduction. Nevertheless, car insurance premiums are very high and it may pay you to shop around.

There are many factors that affect how much you pay for your cover such as the make and model of car, the number of miles you dive each year, what you use the car for and your claims history. Other things that have a bearing on the premium you pay include how old you are and where you live in the UK.

It is a well-known fact that younger drivers are more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident than a mature driver. For instance, a 17 year old, on average, pays £2,727 per annum for their car insurance. In some cases, that may be more than they pay each month to their car finance company. A 45 year old driver pays an average of £814 per annum.

If you live in Inner London then you can expect to pay more, on average, than if you live anywhere else in the UK. The average premium is £1,357 per annum. Compare that with South Wales where the average car insurance premium is £682 per annum – quite a difference.
